If you enjoy long road trips or find yourself behind the wheel often for work, you know how difficult it can be to find a place to pick up a quick and nutritious meal.
Drive-thru menus traditionally aren’t the healthiest and gas stations sometimes have healthy options, but the rows of chips and cookies can be too tempting to pass up when your willpower is worn down by hours behind the wheel.
Fortunately, simply keeping a stash of healthy snacks in your vehicle will save you time, money and calories. When hunger hits, simply open your glove compartment and grab a healthy snack. There’s lots of options that won’t spoil and can be kept on hand for your next on-the-road hunger emergency.
Just make sure to check the serving size and calorie content per serving of these items, because many of these snacks include several servings per bag and you won’t want to consume the entire package which could add up to several hundred calories. Here are some ideas for treats to stock up on and keep in your car:
- Whole grain crackers
- Whole grain pretzels
- Whole grain crisp breads
- Sunflower seeds
- Soy nuts
- Soy crisps
- Raw almonds
- Mixed nuts
- Trail mix
- Dried fruit, like raisins, apricots, figs, dates, bananas and prunes
- Small cans of vegetable or 100 percent fruit juice
- Low-sugar and/or low-fat granola bars
- Low-sugar and/or low-fat protein bars
- Rice cakes
