8 Healthy Ways To Make The Most Of This Father\'s Day

Sometimes Father’s Day, arriving Sunday, June 21st  this year, gets unfairly overlooked. In fact, Father’s Day didn’t become official in North America until 1972, 58 years after Mother’s Day was conceived. And with many restaurants and other businesses still closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, finding things to do on Dad’s special day may prove difficult for some. Let’s celebrate dear old dad this year with a variety of different activities to engage in, or mouth-watering meals to cook – alive style, of course.

Food

We all know that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. And what dad doesn’t appreciate some great food to help celebrate his day?

Have the ultimate Father’s Day BBQ

The day for dads has always been a terrific opportunity to fire up the barbeque. It’s warmer out, and we all crave that unmistakable smoky smell of the grill. Check out our collection of healthy Father’s Day BBQ meals by Irene McGuinness, from Jackfruit Quesadillas to Cedar Planked Salmon.

Host a physically distanced tailgate lunch

Looking to switch it up a bit? Try a tailgate style get-together with some friends or family at your local park or beach. Tailgate parties allow for safe physical distancing while enjoying the company of friends. Just bring your favourite beach chair, and some healthy alive-style snacks and sandwiches, and you’re good to go! He’ll appreciate the food, and the quality time.

Drink

Interesting drinks are always a hit with dads. Try something new this year that will inspire yours to switch it up a bit!

Brew your own kombucha

Here’s something new to try with your dad. Kombucha is a delicious, energizing, and fermented tea drink that comes in a wide variety of flavours. It’s made with a starter culture called the SCOBY (short for Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast), which gifts the drink with a plethora of health benefits like liver detoxification, digestion, and energy improvement, and is rich in vitamin B, antioxidants, and polyphenols.

Try an alive-style smoothie or drink

Looking for an alternate beverage option to enjoy with dad? Try an energizing smoothie, a refreshing slushy or a cooling mock or cocktail for a nice treat your dad will enjoy, and happily share! (He’ll also appreciate the effort!)

Outdoors

What dad doesn’t love to get outside with his friends and family? Take this day to share some special time with yours in the great outdoors. The options are limitless!

Get active

Whether it’s to hike, swim, or sky dive, get your dad out of the house for some adventure and exercise. With the summer weather making its entrance, it’s high time to take advantage of this special day and explore the great outdoors (while keeping a safe distance from others!). Research shows that time spent in nature can provide you with several psychological, physiological, and attitudinal benefits, so it’s a no-brainer for how to spend your Sunday together!

Take it easy outdoors

If the dad in your life is more into a leisurely outdoor adventure, opt for a walk on the beach, some fishing, canoeing or even a little birdwatching. A nice day? How about a dad-style nap in the park? Bring snacks, of course!

Indoors

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, or you’re just feeling like an in-day, here are some inside ideas to keep Father’s day festive.

Game night

No ideas? No problem. Host Father’s Day inside with different game activities planned and according to your dad’s preference. You can go the simple route with card or board games, or mix it up with an afternoon of beer tasting (guess the variety), gathering the family for team charades, or some mini-golf putting practice in the living room (watch the furniture!).

Slideshow and homemade gifts

Another way to celebrate indoors is with the people dad loves most – his family! Put together a simple slideshow of favourite family photos on your smart phone or tv, and take a walk down memory lane. Round out the celebration with a homemade card, a meal and some good belly laughs, and dad will be content until Father’s Day 2021.

Happy Father’s Day from the team at alive!
